RtI Centers

For my first grade RtI Group, I wanted to do something a little different to end the year. I have eight kids in this group and it had been really difficult for me in the past to do a lesson with them and keep everyone's attention,  so I came up with four different centers. The first center was really easy, I just made a Listening Center by choosing a book I had on CD for them to listen to during their time.
I created a word wall and posted words from their word list page that are the most difficult to learn/remember. For one center, they have to choose a word from the word wall, write it on the marker board and then copy it onto their "eye see sight words" worksheet. I quickly assess them during this by just asking them what word they just chose to write or are going to do next. I
made it a little more fun by providing sunglasses
that they can wear while they're doing this center.
The next center is Pocket Poems. I found a clipart picture of a jean pocket and printed it off, then copied the template on construction paper. I doubled it up and folded them to make actual pockets. Inside the pockets are different short poems. Each pocket has a poem and then a copy of the poem cut up into sentences. Their goal is to unscramble the sentences to make the poem. As they complete their poem they call me over and have to read it aloud to me then go choose another poem.
The last center is a Book Making center. I took construction paper and cut it in half and then folded it in half to make a book cover. I did the same thing with white printer paper (this is the book pages). Then I took clipart pictures I found about different things such as Spring, School, etc. Their job at this center is to choose some pictures and glue them in their book and then write sentences about their pictures to create a story.

I got Sunshine on a Cloudy day

In good ole' Illinois it has continued to bring us sad and droopy winter days. When the first day of spring came and there was still snow on the ground I had had enough. I created my own sunshine and puffy clouds to see! Now every time I look out my window I can see the sun whether it's really outside or not.

Dr. Seuss's Birthday

I am a FREAK about reading and I LOVE celebrating famous children author's birthdays... especially Dr. Seuss! He's just a legend for books, I mean who doesn't know the doctor? Anyways besides ordering a special headband and outfit to wear that day I decorated up the outside of the classroom. I reused my cat in the hat reading, Horton, and fish but the Dr. Seuss on the door was a new addition this year. Also, I found the banner above just by Googling Dr. Seuss birthday banner. printed it for free, laminated it, and strung it on some red yarn.

Winter Reading Bulletin Board

I found a picture (to the right) of a bulletin board that I wanted to recreate for our December bulletin board at school. It was super easy to recreate except my silly-head forgot to take a picture of the whole board when it was finished. So all I have to show is my polar bear reading his winter book!

The Diary Of...

For our Tier 2 groups I have came up with the binders for our fluency kids. This round of RtI I decided to focus our lessons around the stories by Doreen Cronin, Diary of Fly, Diary of a Spider,  and Diary of a Worm. We only get four weeks of RtI in this quarter because of the way CBM testing and other things fall, so there are only 8 days worth of material provided.

For Diary of a Worm:

  • after reading the story students will complete their own "worm comic" where they will used information learned from Cronin's story. I used this comic strip. Click on the link and scroll all the way to the bottom to find it!
  • My third graders are crazy about doing readers theaters, they absolutely love them. So I found a reader's theater based off the story of diary of a worm for the second activity to work on. The readers theater is here
For Diary of a Fly
  • I created this worksheet because I couldn't find one that had what I was looking for. After reading Diary of a Fly, students are tasked with drawing Fly as a superhero and providing all of her superpower details and name. I couldn't upload it as a file, so here is a picture of what I created:
  • The next activity for Diary of a Fly is having students discussing the pros and cons of being a fly. I typed up a worksheet where students have to list 5 pros and 5 cons so the discussions could be done in small groups.
For Diary of a Spider:
  • After reading Diary of a Spider students will refer back to the book and pick out facts that they learned about spiders from the book. I found a spider web graphic organizer that fits perfect for this activity. I wasn't able to find it when I went back looking for it, but you can google "spider web graphic organizer" and find plenty. Here's a picture of what it looked like:
  • The last activity for Spider will be a "Facts-Faction-Fiction" sheet where students have to take information from the book and decide whether its fact, fiction, or something that they're not sure about (faction). I found this online at read*write*think.  Click Here to Get It
The last two days of RtI will be spent with kids writing their OWN Diary of…  story. On teacherspayteachers I found a wonderful FREE download that can help get you started for this project! Get it Now

I was browsing around on teacherspayteachers and found this AMAZING set of fluency phrases. My kids are really into Star Wars right now so I was even more excited to find something that they would enjoy. She has all these different sets of phrases based on different characters of the movies and they're leveled from easy to hard. She even includes a set of free posters about fluency and assessment sheets.
